The mission of the Elkhorn City Area Heritage Council, Inc. is to protect and to preserve the history, culture and natural beauty of the Elkhorn City area. These broad goals are to be achieved by implementing an overall plan that is to include the following:
1. Develop strong inter-relationships and work cooperatively with Elkhorn City Government to make the Elkhorn City area a better place to live. 2. Keep the citizens of the Elkhorn City area informed as to the activities of the Elkhorn City Area Heritage Council. 3. Have seminars and meetings with our citizens and young young people to instill pride in our past and present and work toward a better quality of life for the future of our citizens. 4. The citizens of the Elkhorn City area will have an oppor- tunity to participate in the Elkhorn City Area Heritage Council through membership to discuss and prepare recommendations for the future. 5. Citizens' interest and participation is very important to the success of improving the quality of life where we live. 6. Explore the availability of funds from the Federal, State and County Governments to beautify and make our community more attractive. 7. To formulate, implement and target types of activities that encourage positive momentum with available opportunities. 8. To promote the natural beauty of the Elkhorn City area through tourism opportunities and the promotion of Eco- Tourism. 9. To work towards the establishment of an Elkhorn City Area Heritage Center, in which the beauty and mystery of the area can be displayed in a museum setting, highlighting the history of the railroad, coal mining, logging, the multiple uses of the river, local tales of treasure and other mountain lore.
The Elkhorn City Area Heritage Council, Inc. invites inquiries from all persons interested in further information about the council. The Council is also interested in your thoughts, suggestions and identification of resources to assist in achieving the goals outlined in its mission statement. The heritage Council meets monthly on the third Thursday at 7 P.M. at the Elkhorn City Senior Citizens Center, 1035 Elkhorn Creek Road, Elkhorn City, KY.
